The Stump’s Black Basin
In the main novels
Book 1
The giant hand has home-field advantage
The black basin is not a picturesque underground lake. Its walkways, rails and nearby service structures create the battlefield for The Stump, a massive seven-fingered hand capable of making vertical space as dangerous as the floor. Smaller hands and mechanical infrastructure complicate the fight. Dude must learn what can hold weight, where a banked bottle will land and which pieces of the environment can be made to work against their much larger occupant.
By the return encounter, the arena allows one of the first clear payoffs from Dude's experiments with 6/7. He times qualified impacts to loosen The Stump's grip and uses gravity, damaged supports and the hand's own bulk rather than relying on a conventional kill blow. Hex's decision to accompany him comes out of this same sequence, but Hex is not a severed copy of the giant boss.
What fills a room after its boss is gone
The Stump's defeat removes the central threat without erasing the place or resetting the things that live and work around it. Maintenance hands still attend to pipes and parts, often in mutually incompatible ways. After Dude dies elsewhere, new inspection lines reach the old basin and unfamiliar machines begin using openings once treated as mere service cracks.
By the time the party moves between familiar rooms again, a former arena has become a contested corridor. Collectors, repair workers and local animals each use the space for their own reasons. That is the basin's long-term role in the world: the place survives the battle, and the absence of a boss changes its ecology more than a level-clear screen could.
A victory built from the room itself
Dude prepares for The Stump by checking the catwalk, the railing, a bent support and makeshift places to stand. The basin is never simply a flat arena with a large boss in the middle. Its chains and damaged fittings shape what can be reached and what might give way under the monster’s weight.
He does not overpower the enormous hand. He turns several uses of 6/7, a mirrored throw, the companions’ interventions and already damaged infrastructure into a fight that the creature cannot control. The result makes the basin a useful example of this dungeon’s peculiar combat logic: the floor plan and the loose parts matter as much as anyone’s nominal strength.
