Shared Gesture Vocabulary

In the main novels
Book 2

At a Glance

What begins as pointing at a clogged pipe becomes something close to conversation. One finger can mean clear; two can mean a problem. It works well enough that the cleaner joins in and the jokes practically sign themselves. Nothing proves the signs are built into all dungeon machines.

A classroom nobody scheduled

Hex guides Tall through an elementary comparison of a tray, debris and wet floor. Tall repeats the motions, then uses the same signs to draw the cleaner into a shared assessment. The cleaner answers with matching beep counts. Tall can also turn the emerging system into a joke aimed at Hex. It is learned interaction, not merely a hardware readout.

Questions require more than copying

When the party considers a cartridge and possible destinations, Tall uses a combination of gestures for a question. Hex corrects the angle of Tall's wrist, and Tall adapts. A nod confirms the group's proposed interpretation. This builds an important distinction between repeating hand shapes and communicating an intention the others can attempt to understand.

Two modalities, one practical negotiation

Hex has hands and signs; Tall watches, copies and invents extensions; Cleaner answers in beeps while still performing floor maintenance. The household learns by context, not by downloading an alien machine-language manual. A one-finger clear sign and two-finger problem sign are paired with one and two beeps; three quick points toward the corridor become an intrusion signal. The resulting vocabulary supports coordination across sharply different bodies. That is the important connection to the broader gesture system: this robot is included without being quietly recast as a speaking or humanoid character.

Book 3

A language built by using it

Tall's gestures become part of the group's everyday decisions. During a search, signs help the companions agree to stay together. At another point, Tall uses them to ask for the living bow during a supervised test. Their vocabulary grows in the middle of dangerous, practical work.

The signs are rarely accompanied by a tidy translation. Their meaning becomes clear through the responses they draw: someone stays close, a weapon changes hands, or a worried companion understands what Tall is asking.
