The Research Library

In the main novels
Book 2

A library assembled out of familiarity

The room resembles a school library, with low tables, colored chairs, lockers, displays, a cork board and a printer. Some lockers actually open into shelves. Its paper has accumulated in drifts, with bitten edges, tracks and pellets that establish occupation by creatures rather than safe abandonment. It is one of the moments when the dungeon resembles a mundane human institution strongly enough to make the differences more unsettling.

Old data rather than a friendly oracle

A computer opens a partial local dataset cache bearing school-network, media-ingest and RC Lab labels. A keyboard with worn keys allows ordinary interaction, but an archival machine does not automatically explain why the surviving media or safety material matters. Dude experiences recognition without a clear remembered story. The documents and machine are evidence that these environments were used, not a blank cheque to reconstruct a complete pre-dungeon civilization.

The predators determine how much can be saved

The room has only one obvious entrance, making the library and corridor a bottleneck when pastel, tooth-bearing creatures arrive. Destroying the attackers with bottle effects risks destroying the papers and hardware. The group saves a small selection of pages rather than clearing the library as a safe permanent base. The threat turns source preservation into a combat decision.

The way back avoids the library

Once they escape the library, the travelers find another route toward RC Lab. They have little reason to volunteer for a second journey through a room full of predators simply to see whether its scraps of paper might explain more.

Those scraps remain tempting, though. The building's old infrastructure and scattered records hint at connections to Dude's forgotten past. For now, the group carries fragments of an answer, along with a very practical incentive to keep moving.
