The Old Water Line

In the main novels
Book 2

A pipe that almost counts as plumbing

A leaking service pipe, an improvised tray and tubing salvaged by Hex gradually begin filling Dude's bottles. At first the trickle is nearly insulting. Repairs improve the flow, but the group measures what it actually provides instead of assuming it will keep working. Recovery from injury, ordinary drinking and the mere possibility of washing create competing demands. For a party used to surviving encounters one at a time, a steady water source changes what planning means.

Water crosses somebody else’s floor

Following the pipe brings the group to the Stump's old basin, where purple hands now govern the route. The pipe continues beneath a marked territorial barrier and into an opening the local hands control. Hex attempts to negotiate access; the others have to accept that resource infrastructure can create political obligations. Their water line is not an unclaimed shortcut because its metal happens to be fixed to a wall. The group must choose between diplomacy, risk and doing without.

Dinner has a water bill

The meal finisher can produce something astonishingly like a proper hot meal, but only by consuming part of the household's water reserve. Tall tracks container levels and treats every run as a logistical choice. The resource problem persists even when equipment begins to function. Enough water to make dinner is not the same as enough water to keep everyone fed, hydrated and clean indefinitely.

Maintenance as community life

Bottles arranged by fill level, a careful measuring habit and arguments over when to run machines make the refuge feel lived in. Tall takes ownership of the routine, while Dude keeps hunting for ways to improve supply. Their system is fragile and improvised, but its existence is a measure of how far they have moved beyond simply finding somewhere to survive the night.
