The Hygiene Lockers
In the main novels
Book 2
A very ordinary luxury
The search for surviving infrastructure leads to a changing area marked for lockers, garment care and hygiene. Much of the equipment is damaged, and the service grille has been patched against intruders. But the room still contains sinks, a shower, a garment-care unit and a dental dispenser. The details carry the emotional weight of a lost everyday life: soap, clean fabric, privacy, and the prospect of going to sleep in something that does not smell like yesterday's battle.
The problem inside the useful room
The broken fixtures are not the only difficulty. Something small has repeatedly tested the grille; old patches and fresh scratches suggest the room has been contested for some time. The party cannot treat the discovery as an empty store cupboard. Even the effort to wash or change clothes takes place beside evidence that the building's neglected utility spaces have become inhabited and dangerous.
A handful of garments and a little dignity
Sealed bundles yield a limited supply of usable base layers and wraps, while much older fabric has deteriorated. A towel and a couple of black tops count as a recovery milestone. That does not restore the complete, self-maintaining service life Rae remembers from Residency. It does give the group something specific and physical worth protecting.
Book 3
Routes with a second life
When the group returns through old service corridors, signs of the friendship horses' movements reveal that a hygiene branch is also part of an animal route. Maintenance passages designed for the needs of a former facility now serve as corridors for entirely different inhabitants. Cleanliness and danger remain neighbors, even after the party has learned where the better supplies are.
