Hex’s Blue Bead
In the main novels
Book 1
The bead belongs to Hex, not its anatomy
Hex handles the bead, sets it on surfaces and carries it into places where a much larger companion could not go. In the Stump area the bead is part of its small collection. It appears again at the workbench, where Hex places and moves it with the precision of someone who has a use for objects other people dismiss.
The distinction is simple but important: the bead is held, carried and positioned. It is not a glowing joint, a prosthetic eye or an integral mechanical organ. Hex itself is a living six-fingered hand. Making the bead part of its body would erase the point of the scenes in which Hex elects to keep it close.
A small object with a map-sized job
Once the group's paper evidence becomes important, the bead works as a movable marker. Hex plants it against an atlas fragment, shifts it toward a route or puts it beside material it wants the others to examine. The hand cannot always make a long speech, but its choice of position can make a proposal unmistakable.
The bead does not reveal what the atlas truly depicts. Instead, it helps Hex contribute to arguments about maps, hazards and the next corridor to try. That use is entirely consistent with its affection for collecting interesting hardware: an object need not be magical to acquire value in a room where the only available cartographer is a hand that communicates by tapping.
A portable clue about its owner
Hex is a six-fingered living hand with a habit of keeping small things the others might leave behind. Its blue bead travels with it through the basin and back to the workbench, appearing at one moment as a private treasure and at another as something useful to position beside collected scraps. The object is important less for any announced power than for what Hex does with it.
After Dude’s later return, the bead is still with Hex as it works through stored material. That continuity matters: Hex has been making choices and preserving objects while Dude was absent. The bead does not speak, generate a map or replace a finger. It helps give a largely nonverbal companion an unmistakable presence in the room.
