The Forest Pump Shelter
In the main novels
Book 3
A trail that people have used
The party follows disturbed vegetation and a path with purposeful passage marks. A shoe-shaped impression near the earlier campsite does not prove the traveler’s identity, but successive broken stems and worn ground suggest traffic rather than a single random step. Rae, Tall, Chef and others contribute observations rather than waiting for one person to solve the scene.
Old hardware with newer maintenance
A water pipe passes along the route on supports that show fresher work. One clamp has relatively new scratches; a manual valve has newer wrapping around a seal. The pipe seems to carry water, yet nobody has established the source’s legal owner or whether touching the controls would have consequences. The group deliberately follows the path, not the pipe into unknown undergrowth.
The work site is not a house
The trail reaches a partly enclosed structure receiving more than one water route, with a manual pump. Rectangles in dust reveal where tools stood; dry vegetable peelings and an unidentified animal smear suggest recent use by something living. There is no stored meal or permanent bed. That combination favors a maintained work site over a secure residence without identifying the people or beings responsible.
A choice to camp outside
The party leaves the shelter and chooses a separate clearing before dusk, checking run-off, overhead branches and the accessible perimeter. Cleaners work around the camp while the others organize water, fire and equipment. The pump installation thus changes the route’s risk calculus even before anybody meets its maintainers. By the next day, their own tests take place back at camp rather than inside the unknown structure.
