The Forest Pandas

In the main novels
Book 3

A familiar animal in an impossible place

In the forest, Chef investigates fresh, bamboo-like growth while Dude insists on recognizing what he sees before the careful examination is complete. A panda sits, grasps a green shoot with both paws and starts eating. The ordinary action feels almost unreal after so many rooms full of mechanisms and creatures whose bodies defy easy classification. Familiarity is comforting, but it does not mean the group can stop observing.

Movement without malice

More pandas occupy the cane-rich slope. They push through one another’s paths, roll into plants and occasionally collide with the party’s assumptions about how much room a large animal needs. The danger comes from size, density and indifference, not from organized aggression. The party cannot assume that a non-predatory animal is harmless to people carrying fragile equipment through a steep wood.

A herd—or simply a crowded hillside

A smaller panda is seen near water while other animals move past it without obvious coordination. The group records no hunting attempt or deliberate attack. The observed animals feed and travel through the same patch of forest; nothing suggests a coordinated society or a secret dungeon skill. What astonishes the travelers is that nature is allowed to behave like nature.

Choosing a higher route

After the encounter, Tall recovers equipment and the group takes a higher game trail that has fewer panda tracks. The hillside becomes a navigational problem with a solution based on animal movement rather than defeating an enemy. The party has learned to treat wildlife as a source of information about paths, water and the limits of cargo transport.
