Cleaner Beep Signals

Book 2
At a Glance: a language made under pressure
It starts with a wet floor. Tall and Hex make gestures for a clear patch and a problem, and Cleaner answers with one beep or two. Later, three beeps bring the group running toward evidence of an intrusion. This is not a factory-issued translation guide, and it is certainly not speech. It is a shared practice that becomes reliable because the participants notice, repeat and refine it. For this particular machine, the sounds are recognizable enough that the party learns to react before it has time to explain anything else. The domestic comedy of an opinionated cleaning robot also becomes an early warning system with very real stakes.
The fourth pattern is not a universal danger code
During the fog trap, an otherwise ordinary bottle contains vinegar, and Cleaner responds with four beeps. Dude recognizes that exact response from an earlier encounter with Attention's vinegar at home. He also uses it to recognize Cleaner among nearly identical robots. That gives four beeps a definite meaning in this situation, but not a demonstrated universal four-beep alarm for poison, explosives or danger of every kind. A future book could refine the dictionary. For the group, that fourth pattern recalls a very particular encounter with vinegar. It is recognizable behavior, not a demonstrated universal emergency code.
From floor report to security alert
What makes the beep vocabulary valuable is that it keeps its meaning when everyone is terrified. Three beeps have become an intrusion warning. Two mark a problem, even when the problem is a stranger arriving covered in grime and carrying supplies. Cleaner may change priorities from cleaning to guarding, but the household continues to recognize its patterns. That is the distinction between a routine soundtrack and communication: a signal is learned by its receivers and acted on in context. Still, the record does not support printing a complete dictionary for every service robot in the dungeon.
