The party's evidence for Brodin is uncertain long before they meet him. Old material gives Dude an association between a face, performance language and the word Flex. Later, Attention drops the name Brodin in a conversation with Rae and Dude, adding a teasing description of a newly interesting figure. The source is precisely the entity that has learned to make people act through selective footage and timing.
That introduction is therefore not an invitation to declare Brodin an ally, an enemy or Attention's loyal employee. Dude recognizes the name. Rae wants to know what has happened to him. Attention offers presentation, not a reliable account of the man's entire situation. By the end of the third book, the name is a lead rather than a biography. The journey toward Brodin has barely begun.
