Book 3
Fragments under restraint
The party isolates a lump of black metal at an industrial table, keeps smaller pieces separated and places one fragment beneath a glass vessel. Chef, Rae, Hex and the others use cushions, distance and careful observations rather than freely passing the sample around. It is tempting to call the object a weapon, a material or a living thing; at this point the facts are limited to its behavior.
A reaction across the gap
When a cloudy crystal splinter moves closer to the dark metal, the fragment responds. Draw the crystal away and it settles again. The reaction is small, but the group can see the change and begin testing it.
The two objects are clearly doing something to each other. Whether that response can be made useful — and how far it might extend — remains part of the mystery.
Weightless does not mean inert
While the group moves the larger piece, it can have no downward weight yet still pull against Tall’s arm when direction changes. Rae helps coordinate an otherwise awkward transport. The practical hazard is not just heaviness: motion, orientation and unexpected response matter as much as a scale reading.
Something else recognizes the material
An Auditor scavenger takes a sample and scans it repeatedly before withdrawing into the wall. Its behavior demonstrates that another dungeon system treats the material as noteworthy, not what that system believes about it. The group’s later worry about Bear and the black fragment reinforces the need to separate an observed association from a proved medical cause.
