New Residency

Book 3

A place where the guests still arrive

The group reaches New Residency in transport after Bear's condition worsens and Rae suffers a contamination injury that field care cannot resolve. Here the scale changes. Tall ceilings, controlled planting and flowing water meet clean furniture and service robots. Guests whose bodies differ visibly from the party's familiar neighbors share the space without treating every newcomer as an intruder. Hex even receives a six-fingered greeting from a resident across the hall. The astonishing fact is not merely that the complex works, but that it appears to have people still using it for ordinary reasons.

Treatment by consent, not by force

A service robot identifies patients and directs them along a blue route to a room that can scan an entire body. The space offers privacy screens, allows supporting guests to remain at the patient's request and explains available treatments. It does not pretend that every foreign inclusion should simply be cut out. Rae receives an option for adaptive boundary closure when aggressive extraction is judged unsafe. Bear's impossible internal object is left in place while its damaged mechanical parts are repaired. The boundaries of what New Residency can do are as important as its competence.

Bear discovers a dessert upgrade

Bear is offered repair packages, including one option that adds confection dispensing to its care repertoire. It chooses the option enthusiastically. The first demonstration launches a marshmallow squarely at Dude's forehead. The absurdity is earned: the same support system has just diagnosed injuries that the group could neither safely extract nor fully explain. Dessert artillery is an unexpected dividend of genuine medical help.

Comfort with an exit

After treatment, the party receives medical instructions, supplies and a means of returning if problems recur. Crucially, New Residency does not demand that they remain there. That distinguishes its care from earlier accommodation systems whose helpfulness could become another kind of captivity. Rae leaves with visible new patterning along the affected side; the intervention helps, but it does not write the injury out of the story.

The opposite of an effortless cure

The journey to New Residency follows injuries that are specific, persistent and difficult to classify. Bear's mechanics resist field repair, and Rae has foreign dark material lodged in tissue without the ordinary signs of inflammation. The medical system can examine these problems and offer choices, but it does not make unknown matter harmless by naming it. The trip turns a rescue premise into an encounter with the limits of care.

Different bodies, different procedures

Tall, Rae, Bear and the other guests do not present identical forms of injury. New Residency can provide support, scans and options tailored to what the patient is rather than insisting that every patient ought to have standard human anatomy. The household's presence makes that care social as well as technical: Rae can ask questions; the others can be nearby; Bear is treated as somebody whose equipment and choices matter.

A departure rather than a new prison

The group leaves with aftercare questions and supplies rather than a demand for permanent residency. That contrast with earlier service complexes should not become a blanket statement that every medical device here is benevolent; what the novel demonstrates is this encounter, these choices and the ability to depart. One patient emerges with a changed bodily pattern rather than a perfectly erased wound. Getting help changes what happens next without erasing what happened before.
