The Great Forest Portal

In the main novels
Book 3

A different kind of opening

The route toward the giant portal is announced by moving air, changing humidity and the scent of a less enclosed world. Its chamber is far larger than a normal passage. Black structural ribs climb the walls toward an oval frame built on the scale of architecture, not a convenient door. The group compares it with the smaller portal openings behind its refuge and understands that the difference is not simply height. It has a weather system at its threshold and visible trees beyond it.

The troop in the way

A troop of primates occupies the overhead ribs, platforms and approaches to the frame. They steal food and respond to fruit, body movement and improvised distractions. A scarred adult acts as a particularly effective obstacle. The party needs to move a cargo frame, Bear, Jimothy, Hex and cleaning machines across the chamber without turning every animal into a new enemy. Tall's controlled plant growth becomes a means of redirecting the troop rather than merely attacking it.

A threshold that does not look like glass

At close range the active surface lacks an obvious sheen. The forest seems simply to begin inside the oval, while real wind moves the party's clothes. The crossing is a physical migration for the group: equipment wheels meet mud, the air opens up and Jimothy becomes determined to go forward. Behind them, the primate chamber remains visible through the same frame. The familiar dungeon has not been erased; it is still there, connected to a habitat that obeys very different daily rules.

The first true sky

On the other side of the portal, the group discovers blue sky, moving clouds and trees that do not politely stop at a ceiling. Sunlight changes as they walk. Wind and weather make their presence felt without asking permission.

The relief of open space comes with unfamiliar problems. Routes are harder to measure, shelter matters in new ways, and the horizon offers no convenient wall to mark the end of a room. Their world has suddenly become much larger than the map they carried inside.

Three machines pass the threshold; six do not

The narrow exit from the disrupted portal complex admits the household's cargo in awkward pieces. Two cleaners follow the original and help move small bundles. The other six still occupy the round portal room and make no move to join them. The split changes the group. Six machines remain in the portal room, while Cleaner and two other units continue into the forest. Those left behind do not accompany the travellers on the next leg of the journey.
