The Fungal Production Room

Book 2
Cultivation behind marked boundaries
The production space has three shallow fungal beds, a separate output station, floor markings and manual valves for its nutrient supply. It operates like managed infrastructure rather than a magical pantry. The party has access to production cartridges and must understand where nutrient fluid goes, what the floor lines mean and which hardware is vulnerable. Food may be produced here, but only as long as the equipment and the room remain intact.
The smell of a broken line
Wild rats enter through the low service throat in the home area and attack a soft nutrient hose. When the fluid escapes, their priorities change instantly. The leak attracts far more rats than the group can comfortably handle, transforming a maintenance problem into an invasion. Their behavior shows how food infrastructure creates ecological pressure in surrounding service spaces; the equipment feeds more than its intended users if boundaries fail.
Emergency protection, imperfectly timed
When the production room comes under attack, covers drop over the growing beds, tool arms retract and floor markings light up. The system has protective procedures, but those measures do not mean everyone inside is safe. The group faces the choice between reaching controls and escaping with supplies while rats move toward the exposed nutrient source. Technology helps only when its design matches what is happening.
Cleaning has consequences downstream
The thermal cleaning cycle is an aggressive response to infestation. Floor drains carry wash water, fungal scraps, carcasses and contaminated nutrient fluid into older channels. There, scavengers retrieve material through damaged grates. The problem has not ceased to exist simply because the controlled room is clean: its waste has entered another part of the dungeon’s food and salvage economy.
