The Fog Portal Trial
In the main novels
Book 2
A room with too many sides
Six openings rimmed in red make the room impossible to navigate by simply keeping the wall at one’s back. The fog begins low and climbs, chilling the air and distorting how bodies appear. Mew’s limbs seem to change number in the white. Rae and Dude try to keep the group together, but the visual uncertainty is part of what the trial exploits. The edges are visible; what waits beyond them is not.
The other side is physical
Dude becomes stuck across a portal threshold with his legs in one room and the rest of him in another. Rae can grab his belt but cannot find a solid doorframe at the red edge. Split Shift, a second Dude-like figure, appears farther inside the fog. The trial plays with duplication and identity as well as geography. A person can be partly across a boundary that does not behave like a conventional opening.
A loop built out of exits
The group discovers that the openings can lead back into the same room through other openings. The apparent exits do not provide independent escape routes. Low service units carry upright bottles, making every change of direction hazardous. Rae must pace her movements to lead them without tipping the loads; the machines’ appearance alone cannot identify their familiar Cleaner.
What the beeps reveal
Dude pays attention to behavior rather than the machines’ silhouettes. The familiar Cleaner has a particular reaction to vinegar and an established way of beeping. Through coordinated control and a sequence associated with the number eight, the group recovers Tall and brings more service units home. The result changes the team’s resources, yet the maze also leaves Rae with memories she cannot solve by packing the supplies away.
Finding the real Cleaner by behavior
In the fog, three similarly shaped machines carry bottles that look explosive. Shape is insufficient evidence of which is the missing friend, especially in a place deliberately designed to confuse its visitors. Dude tests the clear and problem signs. One of the machines gives the expected beeps. The later four-beep response to vinegar confirms a familiar pattern in a way a dent or paint color could not. It is a rescue built around learned history between a person and a machine. That matters far more than the revelation that Attention has attached control modules to a set of service chassis.
